Continuing from there he then explains what Schumacher and the cast brought to the film, Filardi attributing a lot of the humour within the film to Oliver Platt, and he then talks about how he never took full advantage of the film’s success to push his own career. Other topics include the striking cinematography and production design as well as how the film was shot like an action movie and the use of its Chicago locations. Medical students experiment on "near death" experiences that involve past tragedies until the dark consequences begin to jeopardize their lives.

The inspiration for the story, touched on in the commentary, comes from the term “accountability” being thrown around during the Iran-Contra scandal, and his friend dying for 15-seconds (in the commentary Reesman and Eyer mention his friends was actually dead for a minute-and-fifteen seconds and that it was from an allergic reaction to anesthesia). The feeling is unfortunately short-lived as they begin confronting the side effect of supernatural phenomenon, all of it closely associated with personal traumas in their lives or flaws within themselves. Restoration – Production designer Eugenio Zanetti and art director Larry Lundy give us some insight into the visual look and feel of Flatliners. The fact that I like the characters despite their cavalier attitudes when dealing with matters of life, death and other consequences is a real compliment to all involved. One has to suppose that those in charge of creating that film decided that it would either be confusing or unnecessary for audiences, when actuality, the film itself was.In Hereafter, first assistant director John Kretchmer speaks about getting into the film business, becoming an assistance director, working with Schumacher for the first time on D. Elmo’s Fire, the styles for each character, the color palette, the Halloween bonfire sequence, and the quality of the people on the set. Flatliners joins the many films of my youth which I perceived as terrifying that are, in fact, not as chilling as once believed. James Newton Howard’s score seems to pack more of a punch as well, providing a much fuller-sounding atmosphere.

First AD John Kretchmer reflects on his time on this film in the segment Hereafter (2022, 14 minutes). Joshua Rudoy ( Harry and the Hendersons), who plays the haunting figure of Billy Mahoney, has little more to do than look either terrified or terrifying and handles both really well. Arrow’s UHD/Blu-ray combo pack release offers an excellent presentation and a nice selection of extra features that should please the movie’s fans.Flatliners on Ultra HD sits in a black amaray case with a double-sided insert, featuring new artwork by Gary Pullin on one side and the original theatrical artwork on the reverse. Questions without answers can be infuriating for those who want everything spelled out for them, but that’s not what this film is about. This piece is quite interesting as it covers the distinct look and visual style on display in the film and gives us some insight into how that was achieved. Challenging Nelson for both the leadership and the girl is Labraccio, played by the always-watchable Kevin Bacon ( Tremors). Film critics Bryan Reesman and Max Evry deliver an engaging and informative audio commentary filled with a steady stream of production stories, trivia and behind-the-scenes information.
