I later learned that the Fabriano Artistico paper creates a very nice texture when being used for cyanotypes. Place any object or transparency on the Sunography expose it in bright sunlight, and rinse to reveal a rich blue print. As for the cookie cutters, since those have a much thinner outline the prints were much less defined for those.

To make our sun prints, we used sunography fabric which we were sent from Zigzag and Zebra(they also do sunography paper if you prefer). It was first invented in 1842 and has been used up until very recently as a low-cost way to reproduce diagrams and drawings. Areas of the paper covered by your objects still contain the original blue molecule, so they remain blue. This sheet I could then scan onto the computer and create a digital version of the cyanotype using illustrator. By mixing equal parts of the two solutions you create a chemical which becomes sensitive to light when dry.Use old photo negatives, x-rays, bits of lace, leaves, printed transparencies or even household objects to compose designs. After doing a few experiments and some googling it turned out the paper needed to be exposed for at least a few hours.

I would definitely recommend using something more solid, but it was fun to explore the different effects. This is one of the easy solar science experiments you might like to try with the kids over the summer holidays. If no direct sunlight is available, don’t worry–just expose your print a little longer and wait for the same fading effect.
