Foursquare Spiced Rum is an aged rum with hints of cinnamon, vanilla and nutmeg gently blended in at the distillery. The only people who would be disappointed with this rum are the nuggets that think Bumbu or Plantation XO are great Barbados rums.

Having tried so many Foursquare rums over the past few years I have begun picking up on small difference between the releases. This release, unlike the Exceptional Cask Series (Empery and 2007 to follow) and the Velier collaborations (Patrimonio will also follow soon here) will be available as a constant addition to the Foursquare portfolio.

It’s not the most complex Foursquare nose I have had recently but it has a nice balance and the notes that are present are nicely done. I have also had the pleasure of learning from bar tenders, brand ambassadors, and other enthusiasts from around the world; each one providing their own unique point of view, adding another chapter to the modern story of rum.

The closing three paragraphs of the Rum 66 review, published almost exactly a year ago, are as applicable now as they were then. This rum personifies everything I love about Barbados rum products and is one of my favorite discoveries of 2016. This distillery is designed and built to be highly economic and environment-friendly, using atypical barrels and blending original rums. It remains a rum of enduring popularity, of course, but leaves a deep core rum fun wondering wistfully what it might have been. When all is said and done this is another beautifully balanced rum – there is enough variety in all the Foursquare releases to recommend purchasing at least one bottle of everything they put out.On the other hand, if growling ABV monsters and fierce pungency are not your thing, it would probably appeal in spades, be deemed a damned fine rum — and indeed, it is well regarded and held in high esteem by many, as a result of dialling into precisely those coordinates. When the rum begins to fade the smoky oak notes take center stage with a hit of black pepper and nutmeg, balancing the caramel sweetness.
