About this deal

The book does not grip you at any point, the book does not take you to imagine the scene if that makes sense. Overall a very good quality service from this seller and I would not hesitate to recommend this seller.

Last year, Leonora Nattrass took the historical crime fiction world by storm with her debut novel, Black Drop, which was picked as a Times Book of the Year. But his real mission is to protect a civil servant, en route to Congress with a vital treaty that will stop the Americans from joining the French in their war against Britain. The prose was in keeping with the style I would expect for the time, but this made it quite wordy and dull, although the variety of diary entries, letters and the Captain’s log did help to break it up. A superb historical thriller’ PHILIPPA EAST, author of LITTLE WHITE LIESDeath came aboard with the cormorant. Nattrass evokes a strong maritime atmosphere as well as imbuing her plot with the political wrangling of the period. There is quite an eclectic group of people on board, and that is before a girl eith a dancing bear boards at one of the stops.

I dont know if it was just not my cup of tea, the writing style, my attention span recently, but this bored me to tears to the point i found it really hard to concentrate on anything that was going on, i think i took in about 25% of this book and the rest i was just reading words. When the civil servant meets an unfortunate 'accident’, Laurence becomes the one person standing between Britain and disaster.

Apart from a few glimpses of Madeira and then Praia, capital of Cape Verde, the whole story unfolds aboard the Tankerville and we are given lots of insights into life during a long sea voyage. This historical detail was great and I really felt like I was on board the Tankerville thanks to Nattrass' descriptive writing. A sea voyage on a small packet ship carrying the mail from Falmouth to Philadelphia at this time was already fraught with danger but the passengers and crew of the Tankerville have an early taste of the additional threat lying in wait for them in a pursuit scene reminiscent of Patrick O’Brian’s books or the Master and Commander: Far Side of the World film adaptation of those same novels.
