About this deal

Unflinching, brutally honest, just as Rachel Cusk's A Life's Work was and no book has been since, but with a wholly different tone and story to tell - this is a book for all mothers, from those just exploring the idea to those who have just given birth but also those whose children are beginning to leave: it is a lyrical, funny, painful, sexy, moving and consoling look at the tension that exists between wanting to be a good mother, while holding on to the person with all the desires and longings you had before. By the end of the book I would happily have left home, and moved in with Clover, Pete and the 5 glorious children that they bring up together!

At times I felt it a touch melodramatic and exaggerating in a chaotic negative fashion, but for a lot of it that worked and probably wasn't too far off the reality. It is accepted by you that Daunt Books has no control over additional charges in relation to customs clearance. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Her own mother was brain damaged in a horrific riding accident when Stroud was 16: “Much of my life has been about seeking strong motion both to make me feel alive and distract from the pain of existence. This is not a quick, tear-through-it book, but it is remarkable at answering what being a mother feels like. The teachers have an authority and control over their class, but at the weekends, they want to relax and eat Chinese takeaway in their leisurewear. Clover describes the bliss of being a new mother and the complete immersion you have whilst parenting young children through to navigating the way your relationship changes once your children grow through their teen years, ready to leave the nest. I don’t think it added to the book, it wasn’t what I was reading the book for, and I felt it would be fairly awful for her kids when one day they and their friends read it. My Wild and Sleepless Nights examines what it means to be a mother, and reveals with unflinching honesty the many conflicting emotions that this entails: the joy and the wonder, the loneliness and despair.

Já nevím, přijde mi to prostě jako špatné pořadí - proč si dělat děti, když miluje jen šestinedělí a pak je to pro ni peklo?I am nosy about how other women 'do' motherhood, but mainly I feel a need to share, to be seen, to speak uninhibited about the extraordinary experiences, challenges, changes being a mother brings. I feel like the author awakened emotions in me I never knew that I had, or hadn’t felt for many many years. Even as she’s bracingly direct about the frustrations of motherhood, Stroud also revels in the delights.
