Bright Insight then goes on to argue that the size of the Richat structure matches Plato’s description, which roughly translates to 23,5 kilometers (14,5 miles) in diameter. But then, what do you consider to be the outer edge of the structure? NASA puts the size of the structure at 45 kilometers (28 miles). That’s a considerable difference.

First and foremost, many believe that Plato’s Atlantis is a fictional place, conceived by Plato as an allegory on the hubris (or arrogance) of nations. In which case, Atlantis wouldn’t have existed anywhere, let alone in the Sahara Desert.a b Richard-Molard, J. (1952). "The Pseudo-boutonniers of Richat". Gouvernement Général de l'Afrique Occidentale Française Bulletin de la Direction des Mines. 15 (2): 391–401.

This power came forth out of the Atlantic Ocean … an island larger than Libya and Asia put together … Now in this island of Atlantis, there was a great and wonderful empire which had rule over the whole island and several others, and over parts of the continent.”Evidence of sea water and inundation: Atlantis is said to have disappeared into the depths of the sea in a single day and night, during violent earthquakes and floods. Various evidence points towards the desert around the Richat Structure having been underwater at some point in the past. Non-fossilised whale bones and sea shells have been found in the Mauritanian desert, with plenty of sea shells found in the area of the Richat. There is said to have been a salt water well in the middle of the Richat, and Alternative World Media found evidence of salt pans. Perhaps somewhat controversially, one of the Bright Insight videos cites west-east striations in the land (see photo below) as possible evidence of a tsunami flooding across the land – could this have destroyed the ancient Atlantis? The idea that Atlantis was an actual historical place, and not just a legend invented by Plato, didn’t surface until the late 19th century. In his 1882 book, Atlantis, the Antediluvian World, the writer Ignatius Donnelly argued the accomplishments of the ancient world (such as metallurgy, language and agriculture) must have been handed down by an earlier advanced civilization, as the ancients weren’t sophisticated enough to develop these advances on their own.

Needless to say, many speculators believe that the Richat Structure is not merely a geological wonder, unique in the whole world, but the location of the legendary 11,000-year-old city of Atlantis. Here are just a few of the correlations between Atlantis, as described by Plato, and the Richat Structure 1. King Atlas The European Space Agency. (2004, November 12). The Richat Structure, Mauritania. ESA. https://www.esa.int/Applications/Observing_the_Earth/The_Richat_structure_Mauritania It is also significant that there is absolutely no evidence of a city in the Richat structure 12,000 years ago. Plato wrote about an advanced large city. Where is the archaeological evidence of the civilization that built Atlantis? Where are the remains of a city’s worth of artifacts, of the technology, even a shard of clay pot, something? There is no evidence of engineering, of actual walls, of any improvements to the natural structure. You simply cannot have an entire city and leave nothing behind. The most interesting part of this is King Atlas. Interestingly enough, there was also a King Atlas of the Mauri people that occupied Mauritania and other areas nearby. Though he’s technically a legend, he is commonly mentioned as the first King of Mauritania. Articles about King Atlas of Mauritania don’t mention King Atlas of Atlantis.Cailleux, A. (1962). "El Richat: dôme arasé, surbaissé ou cratère bombé?". Notes Africaines. 93: 27–29. The location of the Eye (Athens and Egypt): The Richat Structure is geographically well related to places associated with Plato’s Atlantis. The Mediterranean Sea lies to the north of Africa, and the Atlantean navy is said to have besieged ancient Athens on its shores. Over in north-east Africa lies Egypt, from where Plato apparently received his information (via Solon) about Atlantis. It has also been suggested that Egypt used to be a colony of Atlantis. Thus far, it’s all looking promising. Dietz, Robert S.; Fudali, Robert; Cassidy, William (1969). "Richat and Semsiyat Domes (Mauritania): Not Astroblemes". Geological Society of America Bulletin. 80 (7): 1367. Bibcode: 1969GSAB...80.1367D. doi: 10.1130/0016-7606(1969)80[1367:RASDMN]2.0.CO;2.
