It has a good selection of modes including a "pulse" one that I wanted, and you can change the brightness to make the battery last longer, but I agree with others it's tricky to navigate the options with the buttons. I swapped them out for a rubber that felt a bit more fitting to me, but I'm sure the included rubbers are fine too. After all, like you say, "it's not very convenient to have to use a specific cable"; increasingly that means USB-C now has the advantage.
