To create the stereo Kind of Blue release, which was apparently recorded with Telefunken U-49 microphones, the prime three track tape (later discovered to be running 1. How this worked in practice, you can see a plant with two lacquers in play (as we found with promos), pressing one lacquer for Side 1, the other Side 2, and then vice versa. Davis played trumpet sublime with his ensemble sextet featuring pianist Bill Evans, drummer Jimmy Cobb, bassist Paul Chambers, and saxophonists John Coltrane and Julian 'Cannonball' Adderley with Wyton Kelly playing piano on 'Freddy the Freeloader. In other words, my ‘ultimate reference’ here is still the original vinyl release, though the UHQR versions (remixed and remastered by Bernie Grundman) really do sound astonishingly impressive! By the way, my references for the above notes were a selection of vinyl copies: the original US Columbia 6-eye stereo and mono versions, an early 1960s US Columbia re-pressing on the 2-eye label, and the recent UHQR issues from Analogue Productions).

I have an original Stereo copy and a Stereo repress and I have to admit that my original Mono sounds the best. Recorded during 2 sessions in 1959, Kind of Blue worked on many different levels and will do so for many years to come. Compare this to the UHQR version and that suddenly sounds a bit odd: the sax is pushed back in the mix which leaves its reverb tail (caught in the bleed to centre channel) sounding distinctly detached in the right loudspeaker. Miles remained proud of the album, performing at least two of its tracks — “So What” and “All Blues” — for years after, until his musical path took him in a different direction. I’ve heard vinyl and digital releases of the speed-corrected versions of tape 1/side 1, and I have to say that to my ears they sound a bit slow or ‘tardy’. This audiophile demonstration album contains 13 tracks which were recorded with 50 year old Neumann valve microphones.

Davis played trumpet sublime with his ensemble sextet featuring pianist Bill Evans, drummer Jimmy Cobb, bassist Paul Chambers, and saxophonists John Coltrane and Julian “Cannonball” Adderley with Wyton Kelly playing piano on “Freddy the Freeloader. In the end, I find that listening to different versions of an album to see which one has what SQ tends to alienate me from immersion in the mood and tone of the music. Every UHQR will be hand inspected upon pressing completion, and only the truly flawless will be allowed to go to market. But unless I got your article completely wrong, it just seems that there are several explanations for the matrix codes – my 1AA/1AA stereo copy should be a later one according to your guide, but obviously no copy after November 1959 had the wrong tracklist on Side B, so 1AA/1AA must have been pressed between September and November 1959 and would therefore be among the first pressings. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.I think that it would be very useful and informative, so if anyone better informed than I wants to run with the idea, please go ahead!

The data capture is industrial scale, outside my capacity, but if anyone wants to build a data capture tool, I’ll happily front it. Atlantic, for example, pressed at least two versions or Krik’s “Whistleman”, one with a white fan label and one with a later black fan label. The single line title appears on permutations of AE to AL on both sides, and the letter D paired with a much higher alpha like AD or AG. RCA Living Stereo classical LPs - the gold standard for top quality orchestral performance and sound! The pinnacle of high-quality vinyl — the Ultra High Quality Record (UHQR®) from Analogue Productions! When I perused the SHF in the 00s SH used to praise the Sony single layer SACD (sacd only) from 1999. I have a 6-eye mono with a matrix on Side 1 of: XLP47324-1B and Side 2 of: XLP47325-1A which is exactly what you show in your first two pictures on this page. Columbia/Legacy say they are currently selling around 20,000 a year on vinyl, as part of the “vinyl revival – the record everyone should own”. AAA 100% Analogue This LP was Remastered using Pure Analogue Components Only, from the Master Tapes through to the Cutting Head. After those original five tunes are presented, Disc One moves on to the alternate take of “Flamenco Sketches,” the only complete alternate take from the original recording sessions (a track first unveiled on the 5-LP/4-CD box set of 1988, Miles Davis: The Columbia Years 1955-1985, the first Miles Davis box set ever issued by Columbia).
